Frequently Asked Questions:
Q. Why
should my practice
consider outsourcing
our medical billing department?
A. This is often among the first questions asked by medical providers. The number of medical practices now outsourcing the billing function is rapidly increasing nationwide. There are several reasons that providers outsource billing: Billing costs less to outsource than to handle with internal staff. Billing is often done more effectively by outsourced billing specialists. And overseeing the billing function always distracts the physicians away from their patient care workload and from effectively marketing their practices. Click on “Why Outsource” on our home page for more details.
Q. If I decide to outsource the billing function, how easy is the transition to a medical billing company?
A. An experienced billing company will make this transition easy. Patient encounter forms merely shift destinations, from the medical practice billing department to the billing company. The encounters may be on paper and sent by mail or UPS, or the encounters may be transferred electronically, from the practice EMR system or scheduling system, or the encounters may be scanned and e-mailed to the billing company. In any case, the creation of the claims merely changes locations, and the work flow goes on. Please click our “Testimonials” button on our Home Page to see video testimonials of our clients describing how easy the transition to our services was, whether from another billing company to MBM, or from an internal billing operation to MBM.
Q. How much does a medical billing company charge for its services?
A. Billing companies conventionally charge clients on a contingency basis, as a percentage of payments actually collected from Medicare, Medicaid, insurance companies and patients. A survey of conventional billing company rates for various medical specialties across the USA is available to you at no cost; merely click on “Contact Us” on the Home Page and fill out the brief form to download the Physician Billing National Averages chart. Rates on the chart range, in both the 2005 and the 2007 surveys, from 2.5% to 14% of payments collected.
Q. How can you guaranty your services as you do?
A. As you may have noticed, we are among the very few billing companies that provide a written guaranty with our work. We can do this because we have been taking on the billing responsibilities for medical providers for the past 20 years, and our experience has customarily been that we provide a substantial lift to the practice cash flow. This cash flow increase comes from three sources:
-
1. Personnel/payroll
savings (It
costs less
to employ
a billing
company than
to hire a
billing staff
and manager.
See “Why
Outsource”
Page)
2. Our billing specialists have deeper experience than most billing personnel in pursuing payments on denied claims.
3. Our clients can use the management time savings (not supervising a billing team) to build their practices and further increase the cash flow.
Q. How do we get started with one of your free billing reviews?
A. We are always happy to meet with new or existing practices, to review the effectiveness of their new or existing billing operations. Our team conventionally looks at a detailed accounts receivable report, sorted by payer. And we look at a large sample of recent denied claims from all payers, primarily the significant payers (Blue Cross, Medicare, Medicaid, Harvard Pilgrim, Tufts, and a few other dominant insurances). Then we look at the work flow within the practice, how the documents get into and out of the billing personnel’s hands. Then we report back to the management. Often, we can substantially boost cash flow for a practice. We know after we analyze the specific practice’s situation.
Q. What is your relationship with Centricity?
A. Centricity is prominently listed on the left toolbar of our Home Page for many reasons. First, we are proud to be among the many users of the G.E. Centricity Practice Management system in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Centricity lists among its clients Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Winchester Hospital, Melrose Wakefield Hospital, Union Hospital, all the Partners facilities, and more than 1,000 physicians in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
